ETMRC N Scale Show Layout

The N scale sectional Layout was built to take to malls and train shows. It mostly went to the Ft Worth Fall Train Show, for about 10 to 15 years. The move was supervised, set up, and operated by Joe B, Leroy H, and Sam W. Transportation in Sam's van, until it was sold, then by U-Haul trailer.

Bob T who started out with the project I was working on got involved with helping Ron and Bob A find out what happened to the missing electrons on the N scale layout.

Bob T was able to find out what happened to the missing electrons and get them routed back to where they belonged. Who would think that soldering one little gap could cause so much trouble.

The picture above shows the n scale layout back against the wall which has been enhanced with a nice shade of blue. Another interesting device has been added to the feet of the layout. Ron came up with some of those small disk shaped furniture sliders and placed them under the layouts feet. One man can easily shift the layout now and it does not seem to get the bench work flexed excessively as was happening before. Way to go Ron.

Back on the ground

Back on the ground – The N-gauge layout was strengthened (the 1 X 4 plank across the joint and one on the other side) to make the descent to the floor after rewiring less risky. Most everything on the layout even runs after the fixes.

New Control Panel and major rewiring

The N Scale layout had a major wiring revision in 2016. A new control panel was designed and fabricated by Bob T, with the help of Paul F for the woodworking required. This was documented by Rob D's Blog and is described in a separate web page.

Now our club has more than just HO stuff we also have some of that n scale stuff and that layout is being worked on as well and will have dcc very soon as well. Bob T our resident electrical genius is devising a new control panel and will have the layout set up to run dcc or dc as the need arises. This layout was originally a layout that went to the train shows and was designed to be disassembled and then set up for shows. We are running 2 of the 3 sections at this time.

One of Bob A's trains. Those things are rather nice looking but boy are they small.

I am really impressed that things actually work and if you get really close to them they are very nice models.

The above and below shots show the N scale layout where the track was reworked so as to increase reliability. Ron and Bob A have reworked the corner so that trains will travel through the area with much greater reliability. Bob T is redoing a control panel for the layout as well.

The N scale layout is the recipient of attention as well.

After track was realigned and some vertical issues were corrected as were some kinks, some new land forms were worked into the layout.

The photo above shows work on the N scale layout as well. This is a good post to show what happens when guys get in a hurry and try to save too much time. Track was installed with some kinks at different places on the layout here is one. So there was not time to do it right but their was time to do it twice, or more times. In addition to the kink being eliminated a larger radius will be installed so longer equipment can be run.

The photo on the left is taken from the left end of the layout and the photo on the right has been taken from in front of the right side. The layout is powered by DC tethered throttles in a cabinet that rolls under the layout.

The photo on the left will give you a perspective of the entire layout from the right front corner. The photo immediately to the right is a bit of a close up of the structures visible just past the first track in the previous picture. There is still more work to be accomplished in the area and more structures to be placed but it is beginning to come to life.

P1010407-350x263.JPG P1010408-350x263.JPG

The photo on the left is the center of the layout and the joint where the two sections are connected is plainly visible. Of particular note each half can have a train running so that it will orbit on that particular half ducking in and out of tunnels with out needing to worry about collisions with the train running on the other half. Also if switches are thrown routes can be chosen that will have the trains running over both of the halves of the layout instead of staying exclusively on just one. As can be seen there is still a fair bit of work to be done on these locations as well. In addition to these sections there is also a third that can be connected to the two of these which forms an L with these two sections and is used as a yard area.
